The splendid brick arch bridge which carries the Trent & Mersey Canal's towpath over the very start of the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal at Great Haywood Junction is a classic piece of l8th century waterways design. It's attractive but also entirely functional, its brick parapets sloping right down to the ground at each end, ensuring that the boat horses' top-ropes wouldn't snag as they crossed the bridge.
