To support high bandwidth demands, optical networks are widely used for the past few decades. In this manuscript, the author proposes the pure fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) based remote node architecture that is responsible for realizing the flexible, energy-efficient, and reliable optical access network. The architecture can transmit the data to the user end with better reliability and improved bit error rate (BER) performance. The proposed architecture can support point-to-point (P2P) dedicated, point to multipoint broadcasted data transmission. The architecture can broadcast the downstream data to all the available users in the network or within a group of specific users associated with a particular optical distribution network (ODN). The architecture also provides an excellent feature of scaling and/or extending the legacy network as it grows shortly. The proposed architecture can transmit data at a very high speed (up to 40 Gbps) for transmission distances up to 20 km without the use of any amplifier for handling various internet applications in a smart city with higher reliability, least complexity, lower power, and cost consumption. The architecture can reduce the energy consumption of upto similar to 30% of the total energy consumption. For the considered conditions, it can save average energy of up to 42 Wh per day, accumulating to upto 15.33 KWh for the entire year. The proposed architecture may be useful for the realization of the concept of smart cities and for supporting the next generation of access networks.
