The author of this report, Sqn Ldr Cedric Watcyn Williams, hailed from Ystradgynlais, south Wales. He joined the RAF as an apprentice in 1926, aged 16, passing out three years later, but in September 1929 he transferred to the RAF College at Cranwell as a flight cadet. The Kenley-based No 32 Squadron, then flying the Bristol Bulldog, was his first posting in July 1931. A range of assignments followed, including, from July 1938, that with the Deputy Directorate of Intelligence at the Air Ministry which resulted in his visit to Germany. During July 1940 'Taffy' Williams returned to fighters, taking command of the Hurricane-equipped No 17 Squadron at Debden. His Battle of Britain victory tally numbered a Do 17 and Bf 110 destroyed, and a He 111 and two Ju 88s shared. On 25 August that year, a Bf 110 shot off the port mainplane of Williams' Hurricane, R4199, which came down in the sea off Portland. His body was never found.
