Bayer’s Crop Science division has agreed a five-year deal with US plant gene editing business Pairwise(Durham,North Carolina)focused on developing gene edited short-stature corn(maize). The collaboration will employ Pairwise’s Fulcrum CRISPR technology platform. The companies say that the deal”builds on the success of the initial five-year collaboration between Bayer legacy business Monsanto and the gene editing company focused on corn, soy, wheat, cotton, and canola”.That deal ended in late June.Bayer’s head of R&D,Bob Reiter, explains the advantages of teaming up with Pairwise.”Pairwise’s proprietary base editing tools allow for specific changes at virtually any location in the genome, which has the potential to make targeted and much needed improvements in agriculture,”he says.”These kinds of new genomic techniques are extraordinarily focused and produce results much more quickly and precisely than the conventional breeding process, ensuring that we can accelerate the delivery of solutions that growers need.”
