State regulators say the U.S. government’s multibillion-dollar push tobuild out an electric vehicle charging infrastructure fails to address regulartesting and inspections – a necessary step to ensure that the units arereliable and meet approved standards. The National Conference of Weights and Measures passed standardslast year for Level 1 and Level 2 chargers that took effect Jan. 1. Thestandards for Level 3 DC fast chargers, however, don’t go into effect untileither 2025 or when devices used to test fast chargers are commerciallyavailable, NCWM Executive Director Don Onwiler said in an interview. Thetolerances, specifications and technical requirements that the conferenceapproves are best practices, but state and local governments often makethem mandatory.
