THE re-entry of Chevron into Namibia's upstream orbit means that all the supermajors who still rank oil and gas high in their energy portfolios now have exposure to one of the world's top exploration and development hot spots. Chevron has acquired operatorship of a highly prospective block located immediately north of TotalEnergies' mighty Venus discovery, and not that far from Shell's major Graff find to the southeast. This deal ended the US player's self-enforced, 19-year absence from the halls of power in Windhoek after it quit as operator of the much-maligned Kudu gas project. The acreage held by Chevron, TotalEnergies and Shell lies in the Orange basin, while ExxonMobil's focus is the Namibe basin at the northern end of Namibia's waters on the border with Angola.
