The Ukraine conflict has accelerated Europe's shift towards greater dependence on LNG as the continent seeks to shake off its reliance on Russian gas.The conflict in Ukraine has fundamentally changed how Europe views its energy relationship with Russia. It is not yet clear whether the impact of sanctions or a move by the EU or Moscow will cut Russian pipeline gas exports to Europe, but the conflict has already brought about a policy shift with far-reaching implications.EU gas storage sites should be filled to at least 90pc of capacity by the start of October, according to a draft legislative proposal presented by the European Commission on 8 March aimed at tackling high energy prices and cutting gas imports from Russia.EU member states will have to add 287TWh of extra supply to storage sites-equivalent to about 260 standard-sized 160,000m~3 LNG cargoes-in March-September compared with a year earlier to meet this target.
