In my last article, I looked at phrases that had double meanings when it comes to our patient's ideas and concerns. As promised, I will now be moving on to expectations. I blame Charles Dickens for some of the problems around this area, as it is difficult to hear the word 'expectations' without mentally inserting 'great' in front of it. Actually, most of the time, our patients have expectations that are entirely reasonable and realistic; however, it must be acknowledged that a book entitled 'Modest expectations' might not have sold so well.
