Magazines are not books. One of the key differences between them relates to nonlinear reading, the possibility of choosing and combining systematic explorations and browsing, the gradual discovery or immersion into selected fragments. Our general strategy for this special issue of a+u is to empower readers to choose paths, as if walking through the city, an intellectual derive (Debord, 1959;Radovic, 2012, 2013). Richly illustrated, "Infraordinary Tokyo: The Right to the City" is not a picture book. Research-driven, it provides a basic bibliography (pp. 174-176) to facilitate farther exploration of ideas.
