To make judgments on the nutritive state of sugar beet, the possibilities of the application of diagnostic plant analysis are investigated. In the mineral composition of plant organs those factors are expressed which influence the assimilation on nutriments. In the application of diagnostic plant analysis one should know the limit values of the nutritive elements, their optimal ratios and their interactions in the different phases of the development of the plant. It is stated that the diagnostic plant analysis is not to be applied instead of the analysis of the soil, however it gives a lot of information about the nutriment supply and disorders of nutriment assimilation and plant development. Besides, control of fertilisation and prediction of crop and beet quality are also possible. Principles and methods of plant analysis, general directives to determine the time of analysis are discussed. In successful consulting work the local experience of the consultant is also very important.
