摘要

Strong earthquakes routinely occur in many places of the world, destroying all sorts of structures and taking lives. Construction must take place on the slopes of hills since there is not enough flat land in a location with hills. It is incredibly expensive and time-consuming to create plain areas by excavating the ground for construction, but it also ruins the natural beauty of the landscapes. Due to the growing population and strong demand for land, there is a growing shortage of land, but land improvement has accelerated financial development and rapid urbanization in these sloped areas. As a response, population density has greatly increased, and in the hilly areas, the ratio of available to needed land is out of balance. Consequently, the building of multi-story structures on hill slopes has grown in favour. On the sloping terrain, structures must be built in order to meet the demand. Studying seismicity and the safety of design in sloped areas is necessary. This work is an attempt to understand the behavior of structures on hill slopes. Due to unavailability of plain lands, the construction of buildings is started on sloping grounds. A brief review of the literature is available on the geometrical configuration of structures resting on sloping ground, setback and step-back structures, and torsion coupling of asymmetric structures. A 9 story structure configured for three different slopes and one regular structures for flat ground with 9 stories were taken in consideration for analytical investigation. Various configured building structures resting on hill slopes were studied using a parametric study to avoid torsion and stiffness irregularities by placing shear walls at different locations. From the results, it is identified that failure of structural elements can be avoided by placing L shape shear walls at the corners. It was observed that Step-back Set-back building configuration is suitable for building structures on hill slopes.
