Ternary phases of the compounds Fe_4Al_(10)Zn or Fe_4Al_9Zn_2 crystallise from zinc melts containing aluminium on a short-term reaction with' iron. Their crystal structures are isomorphic to Fe_2Al_5 (orthorhombic, space group: CmCm). For Fe_4Al_(10)Zn a = 764.14 pm, b = 642.76 pm, c = 421.87 pm and for Fe_4Al_9Zn_2 a = 762.23 pm, b = 646.25 pm, c = 423.00 pm Were determined as lattice constants. Essential influencing variables for the selection of the phases that form are the aluminium concentration of the zinc melts and the temperature at the interface iron/zinc.
