Eleanor Young How has your home city influenced you? Balkrishna Doshi I started my office in the old Indian city of Ahmedabad, founded in 1411. It was right in the centre, surrounded by narrow streets, crowded with people and shops. Everything was mixed. On the other hand I was living in a very quiet place almost on the outskirts while working in this very dense area. The only difference to now is that 40-odd years ago there were not many cars. There were camel carts, some elephants, bicycles and people walking. While working at the drawing board I was constantly surrounded by sound. But I was also thinking about something else, of silence.
