Where did your passion for things like vintage aviation spring from? You might not have realised at the time, but if you innocently flicked through a certain comic in your youth, then it may have all started there. Comics like The Victor fuelled a passion for aviation and military history in many of us -children up and down the land recreated the adventures in the school playground without ever realising they were actually based on true stories. The Victor ran from 1961 to 1992 and was published weekly by D C Thompson & Co Ltd. Some 1,657 issues were produced, along with annuals that made excellent and very welcome presents come Christmas. With its emphasis on World War Two, the front cover always told a story of how a medal was won - for example, RAF Navigator David Romans's DFC as depicted on the cover of the April 1971 issue shown here. The weekly stories of British and Commonwealth derring-do played to the British values of decency, fair play and just getting on with the job without making a fuss. Something we could all learn from today. They also make fabulous wall art, and issues can be bought for a couple of pounds on eBay, although, the nostalgia factor is through the roof.
