Asuccessful range of well-designed, versatile and popular trainers, the Avro Tutor, 626 and Cadet are surely not as renowned today as they should be, given their notable worldwide sales for the era. At the end of the 1920s, while Avro was continuing production and refurbishment of the last 504s, the Air Ministry was looking ahead and specified an 'all-metal' replacement to be powered by the Armstrong Siddeley Mongoose engine. Then, 'all-metal' meant the aircraft had a fabric-covered steel and aluminium alloy structure, replacing the wooden framework under the fabric.
