摘要

A richly symbolic architecture In the Suisse romande a gigantic ring has been built that not only represents a reference to the Olympic rings but is also intended to stimulate community and (social) interaction: the imposing round building with the name Vortex originally formed the athletes' village for the sporting occasion "Lausanne 2020'; and is now being converted into a student residence for the local universities.A new centre The third Youth Olympic Games was held in January 2020 in and around Lausanne (and partly also in St. Moritz). Over a period of two weeks around 1800 young sportsmen and women from almost eighty nations competed against each other in many different disciplines. In order to accommodate around 900 young people without difficulty, a compact athletes' village was built close to the capital of Canton Vaud, in Chavannes-pres-Renens. To ensure that the building would not be left empty after the event and become a costly Olympic relict, continuity of use was planned from the very start: Now the huge complex forms an extension to the joint campus of Lausanne University and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne as accommodation for students. The ground-breaking ceremony was in May 2017 and in November 2019 the building was (initially) completed. The conversion work began directly after the Youth Olympics so that from autumn 2020 the sizable figure of 712 apartments can be rented to around 1000 people - increasing the amount of student accommodation in Lausanne by 30 per cent. Different types of accommodation were made: single rooms that share a communal kitchen, studios or larger apartments with up to four bedrooms and own bathroom. On the upper floors of the southern part, which enjoy a panoramic view of Lake Geneva, there is accommodation for guests of both universities. Restaurants, a children's creche and conference rooms are located at ground floor level, along with a variety of shops, common rooms and offices for the administration. The cost of the building was 156 million Swiss francs.
