BHP's profits up 42 on year, but dampened by coal impairment

BHP has booked an impairment charge of $2.2bn on its thermal coal assets in New South Wales, Australia, and Colombia that has lowered its attributable profit for the June 2021-ended financial year to a still healthy $11.3bn, up 42% on FY 2020. The impairment charge breaks down to $1.7bn for BHP's New South Wales Energy Coal business unit, and $500m for the divestment of its 33.3% stake in the Cerrejón mine in Colombia.
