A few years ago I was looking for a new weaving project. I get bored very quickly, so I tend to make colourful and relatively small items with lots of pattern. This time I thought I would go for colourful, complicated and large. I decided to make a bedcover 6ft 6in x 6ft 6in in size. Due to the overall size and frequent changes of pattern and colour, I would weave it in seven separate panels and then join them together. This was a slightly risky plan, as it was possible the panels might not turn out the same size and the patterns would then not match up, but I hoped all would go well. I would use mercerised cotton in five colours to weave a bunch of patterns which can be used together to create a reversible fabric, with one side brighter in colour and the reverse more subdued, hence called Summer Winter. I had in mind a kind of patchwork effect, and I worked out a design where the panels would be different from each other but, when joined together, would result in a bedcover balanced for colour and pattern.
