Best growth of sugarcane cell suspensions on sugar substrates was obtained with raffinose, followed closely by sucrose. Growth on glucose, fructose, cellobiose, melibiose and trehalose was slightly below that on sucrose. Pentoses have been reported previously not to be utilized by plant tissues in culture-ribose supported growth of the sugarcane cells. Starch supported growth as well as did sucrose. This support is due to the secretion of anα-amylase by the sugarcane cells in culture
