Latin America's two economic heavyweights, Brazil and Mexico, are distancing themselves from the US and European response to Russia's war on Ukraine and have either declined calls to impose economic sanctions or, in Mexico's case, ignored calls to produce more oil. The leaders of both Brazil and Mexico have been at pains to maintain a position of neutrality over the conflict in Ukraine. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro visited Moscow just days before the invasion to meet Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, and has mocked Ukrainians for electing a comedian - Vladimir Zelensky - as president.
