'Eastern Railway' as the name suggests, plays a pivotal role in transportation sector of Eastern region as well as Indian subcontinent. Eastern Railway is the pioneer of Railway system in India, as the first train steamed off on a modest stretch of 34 Kms from Howrah to Hooghly on 15th August, 1854 under East Indian Railways. Eastern Railway is formed out of erstwhile East Indian Railway on 14 April, 1952. Eastern Railway is now a network of 2813 Route Kilometer connecting 586 stations over four Divisions viz. Howrah, Sealdah, Asansol and Malda spanning across the states of West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand. It has also three major manufacturing and maintenance workshops situated at Jamalpur, Kanchrapara and Liluah. These workshops are playing significant role behind the service of rolling stock.
