The health of Japan's electronics industry depends on investment in R&D. VISITORS TO THE recent Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies (CEATEC) in Japan were offered sneak peeks at products ranging from ultra-high-definition monitors to robots with advanced sensors that could perform amazing bicycle tricks or improve your golf game. However, despite the amazing displays, the Japanese technology industry is currently mulling over strategies to compete with its neighbouring 'tiger' economies and the growing strength of China as a manufacturing base for consumer electronics and computer goods. In 2005, the value of domestic production by the Japanese electronics and information technology industries declined 3.3% from the previous year and the overall performance of the industry has been relatively patchy for the past 10 years.
