摘要

This special issue of Oral Surgery covers the very important matter of impacted wisdom teeth, in which it discusses the minimally invasive surgical methods of impacted wisdom tooth extraction, the risk of serious complications as well as the avoidance of nerve injury and other issues. In recent years, we have noticed increasing demands for preventive removal of impacted mandibular wisdom teeth, which is different from the historical needs for wisdom teeth extraction mostly due to the repeated onset of pericoronitis and caries of adjacent teeth. Based on the orthodontist's concept and design scheme, some physicians are discussing the effects of the third molars on mandibular incisor crowding. Prophylactic wisdom tooth extraction is required for various other reasons. With the development of modern medicine and medical instrumentation, wisdom tooth extraction has developed into a minimally invasive approach with material reduction in tissue damage. Additionally, more attention is being paid to serious multi-space infection and even more severe maxillofacial cellular inflammation caused by wisdom teeth alongside a multi-disciplinary collaborative treatment approach.
