摘要

At the turn of the 1930s, an aviation boom was under way across the world, and nowhere was it more visible than in the UK. Many mid-sized towns began to develop their own municipal airports to take advantage of faster journey times. Their existence enabled businessmen and tourists to fly to the larger airports for international flights, avoiding lengthy road or rail journeys just to get to the departure point. However, the small size of many of these new, local airports, and the low passenger numbers, meant a lot of the typical airliners used in the UK were too big, either unable to safely land and take off, or uneconomic to operate for the passenger numbers involved.
