A crescent‐shaped terrane of continental crust centered on Chesapeake Bay is interpreted as being a collisional relic of Archean crust that was probably accreted during late Hercynian times. Arcuate gravity and magnetic anomalies, which represent the possible suture, separate Avalonian‐Carolinian terranes from what seems to be African‐like rocks seen in boreholes in the east Chesapeake Bay region.
