Russia is pushing ahead with plans to develop the Northern Sea Route (NSR) into a "global transport system," according to Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak. The plan is part of a scheme to promote new supply chains after Western sanctions broke traditional trade patterns, forcing Russia to restructure its export flows and to redirect supplies to new markets. In an article distributed by his press office, Novak said the development of the NSR is becoming increasingly important because the Arctic route - stretching for 5,600 kilometers (3,480 miles) through the Barents, Kara, Laptev, East Siberian, Chukotskoye and Bering Seas - lies in Russian territorial waters. The route “eliminates the possibility of external pressure and makes the route as reliable as possible for creating new supply chains,” Novak said.
