Artificial insemination for broiler breeders

Artificial insemination is the process in which semen derived from males is injected in the vagina of females. The objective is to produce high number of fertile eggs. In natural mating (NM) there is preferential mating which may compromise the fertility. But in Al this factor is eliminated and so one can achieve better and extraordinary fertility often up to 98%, and that too without spiking. Spiking (which involve cost) means adding new males to the flock after 45 wks of age to improve fertility. It is commonly practiced in deep litter flocks as old males face difficulty in mounting at this stage. In Al we can increase the mating ratio and use the lame and not so good or old males also which is otherwise not possible in NM. In Al the females are re-inseminated with a gap of 3 days in order to maintain maximum fertility. If fertility is an issue then it can be done with a gap of 2 day also provided we have enough males.
