In arable farming areas, groundwater contamination by pesticides is frequently found. To investigate direct causal relationships with individual management measures, the outlets of pipe drainage systems were sampled weekly over seven months at eight different arable fields in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.Of the 26 substances investigated, 10 were often found, and two substances were detected in all samples. The concentration of the six most frequently found substances could be modelled as a function of drain discharge using a machine learning method. Mobilisation of pollutants from the topsoil clearly occurs in a similar way for all substances and largely synchronously on the scale of a federal state. Thus, soil hydrological models could be used to determine critical moments of high pollutant emissions into the shallow groundwater and thus to optimise monitoring campaigns.
