Theoretical and Practical Consequences of the use of Organophosphorus Compounds in Industry*

Good industrial hygiene and effective protective measures can reduce or eliminate industrial exposure to toxic chemicals. Proof that this has been achieved requires some form of monitoring system to provide evidence of exposure or the effects of exposure, if this should occur. Design of a suitable monitoring system requires a knowledge of the biological actions of the compounds in use, and this paper reviews some of the anticholinesterase and other actions of organophosphorus compounds which are relevant to health and safety at work. The paper concludes with an evaluation of blood cholinesterase measurement and electromyography as practical methods for the detection of occupational exposure to organophosphorus compounds.
