A growing focus on the environment, increased interest in aesthetics, and the downturn in the housing market are presenting challenges and opportunities for firms involved in soil stabilization and retaining walls. Fortunately, manufacturers, suppliers, and installers are up to the task as developers, builders, and government officials become more demanding in their requests. "What the City of Los Angeles used to approve and what it is approving now are two different things," says Nick Jansson, a sales engineer for Soil Retention. Government agencies are more closely scrutinizing permit applications, requiring greater environmen tal sensitivity and awareness. For instance, he notes that the County of Riverside wants to see plans for walls before they issue grading permits. "They never did that before.
