Veneer logs are one of the highest-value forest products that a landowner can market from their forest and may bring as much as double the value as sawlogs on a per-ton basis. Veneer logs are sold to a forest products plant which "peels" them on a large lathe to create large thin sheets to be used in plywood, cabinetry and other finished products. Veneer logs are produced by growing large-diameter logs on straight trees of desirable species. Logs cannot have prominent defects. It usually takes at least 35 years to grow veneer-quality trees and trees of veneer quality are often 60 to 80 years in age and typically come from naturally regenerated stands.
