A major infrastructure permitting bill the US Senate released late Sept. 21 could improve prospects for the 304-mile, 2 Bcf/d Mountain Valley Pipeline to enter service in 2023, if enacted, but provisions to help the natural gas project drew swift backlash from some Democratic lawmakers and environmental groups. The legislation, released by Senator Joe Manchin, Democrat-West Virginia, Sept. 21, is slated to be included in a must-pass funding bill by the end of September. Votes needed to advance the bill are in flux, however, given objections from some progressive Democrats, and Republicans are queueing up to back an alternative approach.
