THE Australian government has awarded three new offshore exploration blocks this year -including one to UK energy supermajor BP - while bids for available blocks in the country's 2021 licensing round will also close imminently. The three blocks awarded this year are from Australia's 2020 licensing round. BP secured Block WA-551-P in the gas-rich Northern Carnarvon basin on the strength of an initial three-year exploration spend of A$7.4 million (US$5.4 million), and a secondary three-year pledge of A$4l.l million. One exploration well is due by 6 February 2028, according to Australia's National Offshore Petroleum Titles Authority.
