BT first put in place a formal three-stage strategy to tackle mental health problems among its 104,000-strong workforce in 2002. Now, as part of its general 'Work Fit' health-promotion programme, the UK's largest telecoms company is actively pursuing what it calls 'positive mentality', a campaign to improve employees' protective capacity to reduce their risk of suffering mental illness. Based on materials developed with the Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health and with the support of its unions (the Communication Workers' Union and Connect), the positive mentality programme aims to raise awareness of mental health problems, whether it is stress, depression or another mental health issue, and provides practical guidance and tips to help employees maintain mental wellbeing as well as advice for managers to help them deal with staff affected by mental health issues. BT is also hoping to remove some of the stigma that continues to surround mental health to ensure sufferers receive the support they need.
