The sheer variety of aerospace development in the 1950s, spurred by the Cold War and the opening-up of the globe, was arguably the greatest expansion of aviation in history. Of course, many trials proved to be dead ends, and among them was the tail-sitter VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) aircraft developed for the American military. The Convair XFY-1, nicknamed the 'Pogo', was intended for the US Navy who wanted a VTOL shipboard self-protection aircraft.
