At the end of 2021, we see a construction industry that has become increasingly complex, but also increasingly contradictory. The built environment is one of the greatest examples of civilisation, allowing us to travel globally, experience education, enjoy our leisure time and be generally comfortable. Now, though, it's also making us a little uncomfortable - standing out as one of the most significant threats to our very existence. I have lost count of how many times in the past year I have read that 'the built environment is responsible for one third of global greenhouse gas emissions' or that 'buildings use 40% of Europe's energy'.
