In a significant victory for the paint industry, the Washington State Legislature passed a bill in late April that requires the state Department of Ecology (DOE) to petition the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reevaluate standards for poly-chlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The legislation, SB 5369, now awaits Governor Jay Inslee's signature. ACA had vigorously opposed the original bill language, which would have established a complete ban on inadvertent PCBs (iPCBs) in paints and printing inks, effective January 1, 2025.
