Planning the focus, the article topics, and the editorial mix for each issue of (mt) magazine starts well in advance of the cover date-as in, more than a year out. So when we began planning this issue, none of us could truly have had any real sense of how long the COVID-19 pandemic would go on or the impact it would have on our industry. Designing, building, and operating ships, boats, and offshore facilities...all are governed by the bottom line. The pandemic is just one factor (okay, a big factor) impacting the industry, so we went after authors and subject matter experts in a wide range of disciplines for this issue focusing on the business of maritime. Our issue leaders-Vicky Dlugokecki, Norbert Doerry, and Matt Tedesco-put together for us an excellent lineup of business challenges and pain points. Speaking of Norbert Doerry, a big thank you to our (mt) editorial board chair for the outstanding job he's done over the last five years in that role. Starting lanuary 1, Peter Noble will slide into the chair's chair (typing that was kind of fun), and I'm looking forward to working with him (and with Norbert, who will remain on the board) as we work to make (mt) as useful and as relevant as possible for you, our members.
