When my children were small, I was attracted to the Waldorf philosophy of education for its emphasis on imagination, respect for the rhythms of nature, and special appreciation for handcrafts. I loved the simple toys made from natural materials that abound in Waldorf classrooms: carved wooden figures of people and animals, silk cloths dyed in soft colors, baskets filled with stones and pine-cones, honey-scented beeswax crayons. But what charmed me most were the handcrafted dolls. Their cottony soft bodies, distinctively shaped heads, and gentle facial expressions give them a unique and magical character. I wanted to create these dolls not just for my children, but for myself!
