COMMERCIAL PARTNERSHIPS have deepened between several large network airlines recently.A new agreement between Emirates and United Airlines means that from November 2022, Emirates customers flying into Chicago, San Francisco and Houston will have access to nearly 200 cities on United's domestic US network. The airlines will have interline arrangements in place at eight other US airports served by Emirates (New York/JFK, Boston, Dallas, LA, Miami, Orlando, Seattle, and Washington DC).In March 2023 United will launch a new direct flight between New York/Newark and Dubai. Customers will then be able to travel from Dubai on Emirates or its sister airline flydubai to more than 100 different cities. Emirates' president Sir Tim Clark said: "Dubai essentially becomes a gateway for United to reach Asia, Africa and the Middle East."In another development, British Airways and Qatar added 42 destinations to their existing joint business, meaning it now serves 185 destinations in more than 60 countries.Meanwhile, Virgin Atlantic has formally joined the SkyTeam alliance. This ended the UK carrier's long-time independence from one of the three main airline groupings (oneworld and Star are the others).
