Idiopathic pancreatitis associated with common variable immunodeficiency

Objective:Description of the clinical presentation of idiopathic chronic pancreatitis associated with common variable immunodeficiency.Patient:A 13-year-old boy with a 3-year history of chronic pancreatitis complicated by a large pseudocyst and affected by common variable immunodeficiency.Interventions:Laparotomy and an anastomosis between the pseudocyst and the jejunum were performed.Main outcome measures:Resolution of computed tomographic and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatographic images. Three duodenal biopsies. HLA typing and test for antinuclear antibodies.Results:Absence of identifiable and well known causes of pancreatitis.Conclusions:Chronic pancreatitis may be associated with common variable immunodeficiency in young patients and although the relationship between both diseases remains unclear, an autoimmune process may be involved.
