Cell envelopes ofRhizobiumincreased the cellulase activity of soybean (Glycine maxcv. Kingen No. 1) cells in a suspension culture within one hour. Cellulase activity was assayed by measuring the decrease in viscosity of a carboxymethyl cellulose solution. The effective strains for soybean caused a larger increase in cellulase activity (1.4–4.1 times the control level) than the ineffective strains (0.8–1.6 times the control level). The cell envelopes of effective strains also caused ruptures of some soybean ce
