I was delighted to see this article by McKeown et al. in the BMJ regarding dietary fibre, its role in maintaining a health gut microbiome and in prevention of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer. While often only raised in consultations where constipation is a problem, when we have the opportunity to discuss healthy diets with patients, I think it is imperative that we consider fibre, a vital component of our discussions and diets.
