Sargassum sagamianum was described firstly based on the specimen collected from Kanagawa,Mie and Miyazaki prefecture,Japan in 1907 by K. Yendo,Japanese Phycologist. However, this species is multi-species and was divided into four species in 1983 by T. Yoshida. This species is called as Neji-moku in Japanese name because the branches are twisted like a screw. This species is characterized by: 1) discoid to conical holdfast and stem arising from top of holdfast; 2) several times branching stem; 3) main branch occurs from top of the stem radially; 4) thallus length is 50-80cm in many cases; 4) liner lanceolate leaves with small dentate margin; 5) the shape of vesicle is spherical to ovate and 6) dioecious receptacles have simple club shaped. This seaweed grows on rocks that are hit hard by waves and is distributed specifically in east side of Kii Peninsula in Japan.
