Previous gatherings had been held in Rio de Janeiro, 2011, Milan, 2015, Shanghai, 2017, and New York in 2019; the 5th World Leather Congress reinforced its global credentials by its presence on the African Continent. The congress was hosted by the Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute (ALLPI) and enjoyed organisational support from the International Council of Tanners (ICT) and sponsorship from TFL, Pittards Global, ATC, Cromogenia Units, Buckman International, CICB and ELICO. Over 100 participants from 19 different countries attended, the majority taking part on-line and viewing the live proceedings in real time from the Ethiopian capital. Welcoming delegates, Mr. Ghebregziabher Ghebremedhin, Acting Executive Director & Programmes Coordinator of ALLPI, thanked the ICT secretariat for accepting their invitation and allowing them to host the congress. He believed the African leather sector would benefit from the congress, providing an opportunity to those engaged in the leather sector to discuss, listen, and learn about new production processes, new technologies and above all to establish or renew networks with the leather family across the rest of the world.
