Urinary incontinence is common, and incidence increases with increasing age (Robinson & Cardozo, 2007). Prevalence varies. Incontinence in women can be subdivided into: Stress incontinence, where an increase in intra-abdominal pressure overcomes the urethral sphincter pressure. Urge incontinence, due to intrinsic, unprovoked, detrusor muscle activity. Voiding difficulties: Symptoms can be mixed. Other conditions, such as neuropathic bladder and vesico-vaginal fistula, can present with incontinence symptoms.
