One of the most common outreach activities for hydroelectric project owners is offering facility tours. Often, representatives of the owner give these tours as part of a school field trip. Tours usually involve showing and explaining the essential concept of using water flow to turn turbines and generate electricity. Even with a tour, however, there is a lot of conceptual understanding that can be difficult to explain. The Foundation for Water and Energy Education (FWEE) developed a kit and curriculum entitled Nature of Water Power to help teach these concepts in classrooms. Visit the Internet site (www.fwee.org/TG/nwaterpwr. html) to view the curriculum. Several hydroelectric project owners use activities from the Nature of Water Power curriculum to support tours of their facilities.
