A momentous offshore wind lease auction saw six blocks in the New York Bight awarded mostly to foreign players, allowing European oil and gas companies to dominate the sector in the US. The lease sale comprised more than 488,000 acres and was the largest such auction to date in the US. The US has trailed behind Europe in developing offshore wind assets, and as more projects are planned and lease auctions held, it's becoming clear that US oil and gas companies do not plan to get involved. US supermajors seem to prefer energy transition technologies more directly related to their oil and gas assets, such as carbon capture, hydrogen, or biofuels, clearing the way for European heavyweights to take advantage of the growing wind sector in the US.
