Metro Railway, India's first and Asia's fifth has carved a unique position in the hearts of the people of Kolkata since commencing its journey from Esplanade to Bhawanipur (Now Netaji Bhavan] on 24th October, 1984. Services from Dum Dum to Tollygunge were introduced from September 27, 1995. With a view to finding out an alternative solution to alleviate the sufferings of the Kolkatans, the Mass Rapid Transit System was set up in 1971 envisaging the construction of five rapid transit lines in the city of Kolkata, totalling to route length of 97.5 kms and it ultimately culminates in adding new infrastructure and state -of- the - art technology which has resulted in robust and safe as well as secured and fast mode of transportation.
