Major airlines will inevitably need to incorporate hydrogen into their fuel mix because sustainable aviation fuel “is not going to solve our whole emissions problem” by 2050, American Airlines VP of Sustainability Jill Blickstein said Dec. 1. Many forecasters have highlighted incredible growth potential for the SAF market as major airlines work towards their decarbonization goals. Future Markets Insights expects the global SAF market to grow from $220 million in 2021 to $15 billion by 2030. Transparency Market Research estimated it would go on to reach a value of $402 billion by 2050. And the International Energy Agency projects that global SAF volumes will grow from 18 billion liters (4.7 billion gallons) in 2025 to 75 billion liters (19.8 billion gallons) in 2040, when it will comprise 20% of global jet fuel volumes.
